zen courtyard...

Commissioned and completed in 2008 at Marlborough primary school, Swanpool, Falmouth. Previously the courtyard was an un-used and unloved space, adjacent to a classroom, at the back of the school building.

The Zen garden was jointly designed and built with the schools pupils and is now used as an outdoor classroom, for staff meetings and as quiet area. The space was designed as a peaceful and natural space and, as with most Zen gardens, the aim is help people to connect nature and therefore themselves.

Inspiration for the design came from the book “In Praise of Shadows” by Junichiro Tanizaki. Created by hand and using natural materials, the design became a journey of discovery of beautiful shadows cast on white by lines of bamboo and form of wood, broken by the movement of green foliage in the wind....
